Despite the long recession in Europe, more specifically the UK, oil discoveries and the LNG boom are keeping our expats in work and hopeful for the foreseeable future.
At a time when the construction industry looks woefully to the Middle East and wonders ‘what went so wrong’ the millions of oil workers around the world let out a collective sigh, comforted by an oil bounty in a variety of far-flung places.
The downturn in mega construction projects, especially the faltering prospects of Dubai World, have sent a clear message to the world that the dreams of imperial-scale housing complexes fit for kings and millionaires might just be taking on nightmarish proportions.
In this climate of insecurity there is a haven where a team of experts with many years experience who look after the interests of expats and offer them the best chance of relocating overseas. In 2010 the Expat Network website will be even more impressive – two years of work to improve the back-room function of the organisations’ much visited expat portal will mean that EN’s members and recruitment buyers will be able to do much of their own work online without the need for emails, letters and phone calls.
Talking about the changes, Linda Taylor, Director of EN commented: “It’s been a hard slog getting our website more automated but we believe it will benefit all our members and recruitment contacts immensely and will allow the EN team to get back to what is important, customer care and one to one relationships with our expats.”
One to one relationships with their members was the one thing the three founders of Expat Network were always insistent on, this was the mantra that established the organisation in the early days and the reason why some members who joined way back in 1989 are still with the organisation and have no intention of leaving.

Thousands look overseas for work (3/10/2008)
As the cost of living in the UK rises and the benefits decrease, more and more people are looking overseas for a better way of life. Since 2001, the level of emigration has risen by 35% and is accelerating.
Slowly but surely the global economic crisis is hitting the labour markets both at home and abroad. Recently an article in MEED (Middle East Economic Digest; 26 Sept-2 Oct.2008) suggested that the project finance market in the Gulf, of all places, is in difficulties because of the aftermath of the failure of Lehman Brothers in the US. This situation contrasts hugely with reports in 2007 when banks interested in striking deals in the sector were literally falling over each other for business.
Recruitment companies are witnessing a downturn in employment opportunities globally but the home market is on a significant downturn.
Kevin Green, REC chief executive, said: "The deteriorating economy is now having the expected negative impact on the labour market. The demand for both permanent and temporary workers is weakening, although it must be remembered that this follows a period of unprecedented high demand for staff.”
Alan Nolan, director at KPMG, added: "The slide in the UK economy continues to hit the jobs market hard, with yet another sharp drop in recruitment.
"UK employers are continuing to control payroll costs through redundancies, and by refusing to take advantage of a growing, but increasingly unused, pool of skilled labour. These workers are starting to drift abroad in search of employment, and there is a risk that when the market turns the UK will be left behind by a skills shortage."
Hannah Ellis Murdock, director of the Really Good Recruitment Company, that deals in management and executive recruitment, said: “Sales, marketing and accountancy are still very buoyant. Construction is down – we’re getting a lot of CVs from people in the construction industry and few vacancies.”
Ed Jessamine, managing director of an arm of TLG specialising in the recruitment of IT professionals, reported a downturn in both the number of candidates and the number of vacancies.
“When there is movement in the market, people move around and we fill the gaps,” he said. “At the moment the market’s stagnant. People are watching to see what’s happening because they’re frightened of losing their jobs.
“Ironically, there is a skills shortage in the IT market worldwide. The change will probably come when the banks update their systems and start to recruit again. It happened after 9/11 and when the dot com bubble burst.”

In our 30-year history we’ve witnessed highs and lows in the global recruitment market – one decade construction is booming the next it’s the oil and gas sector. In a downturn at home potential expats need to be on top of what few jobs are out there.
