Mott lands tunnel design for Hong Kong Airport

Mott MacDonald to design passenger and baggage tunnels at Hong Kong International Airport

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) to undertake the detailed design of a 2.6km set of tunnels to house the automated people mover and baggage handling systems, which will serve the third runway concourse of the proposed expansion into a three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

The project consists of multiple cell cut-and-cover tunnels which will connect Terminal 2 and an automated people mover depot at one end, with the proposed third runway concourse at the other. Most of the tunnels will be constructed on newly reclaimed land supporting the expansion of HKIA.

Robin Wong, Mott MacDonald’s project manager, said: “This is a very exciting and challenging project for Mott MacDonald. Our combination of tunnel experience and extensive track record at HKIA has given the AAHK confidence that we will be able to deliver this challenging scheme to the highest standard.”

This appointment strengthens Mott MacDonald’s position in the tunnel sector in Hong Kong and the wider Asia Pacific region and reaffirms the consultancy’s leading position with the AAHK. The company has been working continuously at HKIA for over 20 years, starting with setting out the development strategy and led the design of Terminal 1, the North Satellite Concourse and was involved in the design of Terminal 2. The consultancy is currently working as part of a joint venture, to deliver the Midfield Concourse which opened on schedule at the end of 2015.

Mott MacDonald also completed the environmental impact assessment for the planned expansion of HKIA, enabling the development to proceed, and is also part of the team undertaking the detailed design for the 650ha land reclamation. The consultancy was also recently appointed to carry out the environmental monitoring and audit for the expansion of the HKIA over the next decade.
