LNG Canada contracts BAM to build new Rio Tinto wharf

BAM International together with JJM Construction (Canada) and Manson Construction (USA) has been awarded the contract to build the new Rio Tinto Aluminium BC Works wharf on behalf of LNG Canada. This wharf will replace the existing Rio Tinto Terminal B, used for import and export of raw materials and finished products for Rio Tinto’s ongoing operations, that needs to be relocated due to the planned LNG export terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia (approximately 600 km northwest of Vancouver).

The project value amounts to €95 million (of which 50% for BAM). It will take 1.5 year to complete the wharf. Construction will commence depending on final confirmation by LNG Canada. The wharf (320 x 60 metres) for Rio Tinto Aluminium BC Works will include a berth for barges. Both elements will be built on more than 400 steel piles with a concrete deck of approximately 20,000 m3. BAM considers close cooperation with local suppliers and involvement of local workers as key factors to successfully deliver this project.

LNG Canada is a joint venture company comprising four global energy companies with substantial experience in liquefied natural gas (LNG) – Shell, PetroChina, KOGAS and Mitsubishi Corporation.

This joint venture will be responsible for the design, build and operations of the LNG export terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia. Construction of the first phase of this project will take approximately five years. Since 2011, LNG Canada has worked closely with the community, with First Nations and with municipal and regional governments to understand how the project can help Kitimat, the region and the province of British Columbia achieve its social, economic and environmental aspirations.

Will your partner be travelling with you?

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.
